Master Classes | Super Studio Sunday

Unlock a New Super Power!

Something brand new is happening on Sunday at the conference.
Awards will be given throughout the conference. So instead of the breakfast, it will be Super Studio Sunday. Everyone will have the opportunity to take a studio class. We want everyone to experience a master class, so the cost of the master class is cut in half! You can pick your class from a wide array of different artists, media, and styles. The biggest problem will be picking just ONE!

Be sure to purchase your Super Sunday Studio pass with your online registration, or you can add the pass anytime online. Any problems, please contact us.

Prior to the conference, you will be sent an email and you will be able to pick your top 3 choices and we will endeavor to give you your first choice.

This workshop will be a hands-on experience with individual projects guided by self-thought.  Participants will warm up with 2-D coloring and drawing and progress into a 3-D clay project.  Learn easy ways to use clay in the classroom without a kiln or proper facility.  Connecting with your students by letting them connect with themselves.  Empowering our students with self-thought.  Clay will be provided.

Stencil Graffiti Superheroes with Jaime Shilen

Time: 9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Materials Fee: $15 -canvas and spray paint will be provided

Embrace the vibrant and dynamic world of Street Art and create your own Stencil Graffiti Artwork using spray paint. Choose to paint your favorite Superhero (or Villain) while creating a work of art that not only grabs the attention of your viewer, but “POP” from the canvas. Participants will learn to create their own stencil layers to create a realistic representation of their subject and be encouraged to add their own Social Commentary by adding words and mixed media.

The use of charms, beads, buttons and other objects are an important part of the African/African-American narrative tradition in the visual arts. These objects are used for protection, power, healing, memory, and keeping history. In this workshop, the use of charms, beads, buttons, ribbons, thread, applique, and other objects will be employed to create a personal, functional, power pouch.

This creative activity will be explored within the context of understanding the Lukasa Board from the West African tradition of the Luba people. As well as, emphasis will be upon how the objects are used for personal storytelling within the African American Oral Tradition.

In addition to materials supplied, it is suggested that participants may bring optional personal objects such as special buttons, beads, charms, etc.

Draw All You Can (aka STEAM Drawing) with Hiep Nguyen

Draw All You Can (aka STEAM Drawing) adds and promotes the ART component to STEM education. With the movement towards STEAM, educators finally recognize that there are connections across the disciplines, and art is a learning tool that can positively impact a variety of skills such as collaboration, communication, creativity, and critical thinking.

Objectives: Participants will:

  • Learn 5 steps facilitation process with our innovative DRAW ALL YOU CAN CARDS.

  • Explore ways to mix, combine, and expand visual vocabularies and new ideas for drawings.

  • Incorporate 7 art principles such as Emphasis, Patterns, and Spaces…etc., into one single powerful drawing lesson.

  • Create large-scale collaborative drawings that empower all.

Whimsical Magical Gourds — Gourd Sculpture with Jenn Norpchen

"The gourd is a magical canvas: its shape and patterns guide the artist to what it will become, ‘each piece unique’.” In this Master Class, create a whimsical creature exploring the organic nature of a gourd using wire armature, metal mesh, clay, wood, and various embellishments. Learn about the history and characteristics of gourds and tap into your imagination while utilizing the creative process to create a miniature sculpture with a simple gourd. Walk away with knowledge of sculptural techniques, step by step directions for implementation, and your own imaginative whimsical gourd."

Spontaneous Color! — Watercolor Painting with Helen Plenert

Time: 9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Helen debunks that notion of watercolor being the most difficult medium. She plans on having participants work spontaneously. Watercolor, by nature, flows, splatters, and drips. By harnessing these characteristics, the participants will create without fear, using its natural properties to our advantage. We will be working from still life displays placed around the room.

Pastels with Animals with Sandy Lindblad

Time: 9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Materials Fee: Please bring items from suggested list.
Class Maximum: 20

In this workshop, you will learn various ways of working with pastels and gain confidence in using the media. Techniques will be shared with demonstrations on the use of a variety of papers and the qualities of different pastels. You will see your pastel painting come alive through the use of vibrant color, while creating a colorful creature.

Participants should bring a couple of simple color photos to work from, taken without a flash and with a direct light source, such as a lamp, or outside light (morning or early evening).

Other supplies to bring:

  • Pastels: Small set of SOFT pastels ½ sticks pastels

  • Pastel paper*: 8” x 10” or 11” x 14” Canson, Uart, ampersand, or premier pastel paper with 320 grit

  • Paper Color: gray or neutral color

  • Pastel Pencils: 1 or 2 to draw your image on the paper, or come with the image pre-drawn on paper

*Some pastel paper or board will be available to purchase (estimated: $5.00 - $12.00)

Sumi-e Painting with Block Prints — Block Printing and Japanese Painting Combined with Unni Stevens

Time: 9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Materials Fee: $15 Linoleum Block, Ink, Paint, Rice Paper,
Class Maximum: 20

In this class, we will combine Japanese painting and symbols with linoleum prints, on rice paper.

We will practice how to hold and load the brus and different brush strokes.

Using ink and watercolors we will create our own background painting on rice paper.

Then we will design and carve an image into a linoleum block, that we will then ink in our choice of color, and print onto our sumi-e painting. We can finish up with some Japanese symbols and end up with a finished painting and a linoleum block that can be used for printing again and again.

Cancelled: Defining Your Own Personal Visual Style Mixed Media with Gwen Amos

Materials Fee: $15 and *While some magazines will be provided in the workshop, consider bringing your own copies of high-end magazines, such as Vogue, Vanity Fair, Martha Stewart, Travel and Leisure, etc.

Ever wonder how to create your own visual style? In this Master Class, you will learn how to compose a strong cohesive story using the principles of Interval, Pattern, and Balance. Learn how to select and de-construct images to clarify your concept through the articulation and unification of these three principles. Walk away with an understanding of how the many variations of these influence and dictate the strength and boldness of your own visual style. These techniques and principles can be applied to your own artwork and / or shared with your students in clarifying their own artistic vision.

Cancelled: Painting with Wool: Images in Felt with Debra Hosler

Time: 9:45 a.m. – 12:15 p.m.

Materials Fee: $25; please bring a pair of sharp scissors, a gallon size ziplock bag, and tweezers
Class Maximum: 15

Learn how to "paint" an image with dyed wool fibers and yarns. Students will create a 6" square with an image of their choice, using a combination of needle and wet felting techniques to transform it into felted wool fabric that can be framed for display or used in a sewing project. Students may use their imagination or bring a copyright free image with simple lines as a reference. Materials and tools will be supplied; a $25 materials fee is required, paid to the instructor at class.
