CAEA Annual State Conference

Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Art

{San Jose, 2010} Conference
November 18 - 21, 2010

Diane Warwick made this song famous, “Do you know the way to San Jose?” I hope you do. The Northern Area Council would like you to join us this November in San Jose for CAEA’s State Conference, “Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Art.” We have a host of activities planned starting with our tours.

The Thursday tour to Pixar, will be the one for you if you are interested in animation, and if you are interested in sculpture, sign up for the docent tour of Stanford’s Rodin Sculpture Garden walk and the Cantor Museum. Watercolorists and painters will enjoy painting at Ardenwood Farm with Robert Regis Dvorak. Robert will be teaching a watercolor plein air master class there. On Friday, if you haven’t been to San Jose in a long time, you might be interested in visiting the San Jose Museum of Quilts and Textiles, San Jose’s Institute of Contemporary Art, or the San Jose Museum of Art.

The committee is also excited about our Master Classes. Thanks to San Jose State’s Donna Thompson, CSU San Jose will be our host with many of their instructors teaching Master Classes. In addition, all keynote speakers will be giving a workshop or Master Class. Digital artist, J-Walt will be presenting a workshop at the Digital Strand on Saturday. The first 28 participants who sign up to attend the Digital Strand will be programmed into his class. Chicano artist Carman Lomas Garza will be teaching a cut paper Master Class at the hotel and Pixar’s Bill Cone, a master of color, will be teaching a pastel class at CSU San Jose.

Workshop Chair, Kathleen Crocetti, has worked hard to provide you with a large variety of workshops, presented by CAEA members, and exhibitors for you to choose from.

Along with the Master Classes and workshops being offered, there will be three strands: Elementary, Digital and Administrator/Higher Ed. To make these strands successful we need your help getting the word out to elementary teachers, digital visual arts instructors, administrators (especially your own), and all of the higher education instructors teaching art education in colleges and universities.

The Exhibitor Kick Off Event on Thursday evening will once again welcome our exhibitors and conference participants in a big way! On Friday evening, after the General Session , there will be a new event in the hotel, Extended Hours Exhibitor’s Hall and the Teacher as Artist Exhibit Opening Reception, with wine and hors d’oeuvres. The Jazzy Evening with Friends and Art will follow on the second floor of the hotel. Jazz musicians will entertain as you catch up with friends, new and old and join in the fun at Area Receptions and a host of other activities planned for you. Also, don’t forget to bring an auction item. For every item you bring valued at $25 or higher, you will receive a raffle ticket for a ceramic kiln worth $4000 donated by ceramic artist John Toki, from Leslie Ceramics.

See you in San Jose in November.
