CAEA News!
The California Arts Project created with the support of Joan's two daughters and the California Art Education Association, the annual Joan Peterson Arts Scholar Program. This program selects each year, one to four teachers who wish to attend a TCAP intensive program or institute but need fee support. Each individual selected as a Joan Peterson Scholar will have his or her TCAP program fees waived and in return will share their institute/program experiences, professional reflection and learning. For the 2012-2013 year due to fiscal hardships facing many schools and districts, TCAP is expanding the Joan Peterson Arts Scholar program to one arts scholar from each TCAP Regional Site. To apply, you must send and email your completed application packet to TCAP by March 12, 2012. Contact TCAP or your Regional TCAP Director for 2012 programs that qualify.

Barbara Hughes Travels to Cuba with NAEA

In early October, the National Art Education Association (NAEA) partnered with Professional Abroad to send a 26-member delegation of art educators—led by Past President Barry Shauck and President Robert Sabol—to Havana, Cuba, as part of an initiative to conduct research about education policy and practices in Cuban schools and communities.
CAEA member, Dr. Barbara Hughes, Co-Chair of Visual and Performing Arts at Aragon High School in San Mateo, represented California. Delegates attended schools, met with art educators, administrators, professionals, and government officials to discuss common challenges and experiences. Art Education is one of Cuba’s greatest strengths, the arts (art, theater, music, choral, dance, etc.) can be found as part of the regular school curriculum in the primary schools (grades K-6) and the secondary schools (grades 7-9).
At the high school level, students choose from a number of arts-focused paths, special schools throughout the country combine the regular public school academic curriculum with intensive arts education. Based on positive responses to this inaugural joint venture, the U.S. Department of Education is exploring possibilities of conducting similar travel/study delegations to other countries. Research is an essential element in providing a firm foundation for education, expanding our understanding of the field, and advocating for it.Leven
CAEA Loses Its First President, Leven Leatherbury
In late August, Leven C. Leatherbury, CAEA’s first President, and one of the early pioneers who established CAEA, passed away peacefully in San Diego. He not only served as our first President, but also actively supported visual art education in many other ways. With an extensive background in the classroom, teaching art at the elementary, secondary and college levels, he was active in developing the State Framework for art education and the adoption of State Instructional Materials in Art document. He served as a curriculum specialist in San Diego City Schools and was editor of Arts and Activities Magazine, along with playing an active role in planning our state conferences, and served as our Conference Administrator until 1992.
On the national level, he was a Vice-President of NAEA and served as the National Director of NAEA’s Supervision/Administration Division, and in 1982, he was named NAEA Visual Art Educator of the Year.
For those of you who attended the Los Angeles State Conference in 2009, you had a chance to hear him share a few thoughts during the special presentation and reception given for him and our other past presidents. Much of what has been accomplished today is due to his work in establishing a strong foundation for the organization and his subsequent contributions in the following years.
A special CAEA Scholarship is being established in his name to honor him and all of his legacy. To make a donation, send a check to CAEA Scholarship Fund (Leven Leatherbury in the memo line), at California Art Education Association, 80 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. #373, Sierra Madre, CA 91024.
