2018 CAEA State Conference

Welcome Aboard CAEA!

By Dr. Nancy Andrzejczak

This year CAEA is taking a cruise, albeit we will never leave port. Join us aboard the historic Queen Mary in Long Beach, November 9-12, 2018. This conference is one of the most jam-packed conferences ever with maximum professional development and fun. The conference is designed to help you navigate new horizons in Visual Art Education.

First, the structure of the conference is different. The actual conference begins 5PM on November 9th aboard the ship. But we don’t want to waste a minute, so we have loaded Friday beginning at 9AM with pre-conference events with a visit to Long Beach Unified School District’s Wilson High School, a distinguished CTE high school and their VAPA Magnet-Renaissance High School for the Arts. Then you can choose between museum tours (Museum of Latin American Art, University Art Museum or LB Museum of Art), master classes, and even Art Deco or History ship tours. Then Friday night, there will be a huge reception with the exhibitors with fun hands-on demonstrations. For those who love mystery and spooky fun, sign up for the ghost tour that night—the QM is one of the most haunted places in the US.

Next, Saturday and Sunday are loaded with workshops and master classes. Saturday evening, you can hop the free shuttle to the Long Beach Art Walk. Then, you won’t want to miss our first Curriculum Slam on Sunday! Sunday night, stay aboard the ship with workshops, Artisan’s Fair, and master classes until after 9PM! Monday morning we will offer “workshopping” – where you will be able to pick from a buffet of 20-25 mini-sessions. This will be followed by our awards brunch.

We lined up an absolutely fantastic group of speakers for you. While diverse in background and topic, the connecting strand of innovation and creativity links them all. Our speakers include: Cindy Foley from the Columbus Museum of Art, Wendy Maruyama, Renowned Artist and furniture maker, Dr. Marilyn Stewart, our featured Scholar Speaker, and Dionisio Ceballos, Emmy winner and multi-disciplinary artist.

One of our new featured events is Lunch with a Mentor. This event is ONLY for pre-service through year five teachers. Tickets for this event are very limited. Davis Publications is a key sponsor for this event to keep the luncheon price affordable. Marilyn Stewart will be one of the mentors available during the luncheon. This event combines lunch and network time with a variety of mentors. If you are a new teacher don’t miss this event on Saturday.

Last, but not least! The conference doesn’t end November 12th. Included in your registration fee, we have planned a conference Post Day in the spring of 2019 that will be offered across the state. To accommodate our vast state, Post Day activities will be held at numerous locations North to South. This day will provide you with the opportunity to share the ideas you tried as well as, network and learn from teachers from your area.

All aboard and don’t miss the boat!!
